Finding A Balance

Managing Dance, School, and Friends

o

ne of the biggest challenges for a dancer is balancing school activities, friendships, and all of the requirements of a dance education.  With the demands of technique classes, rehearsals, and performances, it can be a difficult task to find the time and energy for homework and other school related activities.  The following suggestions may help you prioritize and organize your time.

  1. Remember:  Dance and school education are equally important.

Many times, dancers wonder why they need to study or learn other subjects when they are concentrating on dance.  Aspiring dancers are motivated by the following reasons to help them continue with their studies:

    • School work helps develop your intellectual side.  Math promotes logical and analytical thinking which will be beneficial to future money management and financial decisions.  Good writing skills enhance resumes as well as develop a different outlet for creative expression.  Science educates us about human body mechanics which is an advantage for a dancer.

    • Maintaining a strong grade point average increases chances for college dance scholarships.  This type of college candidate shows a strong commitment to education which is impressive to dance departments.

    • A well rounded individual is one of the most important aspects of an outstanding dance performer.  A dancer that has experience in other aspects of life can pull from these areas to add to their performance.

  2. Make monthly and weekly schedules.
Invest in an organizer.  Using an organizer can relieve some of the anxiety of trying to remember all of your activities.  At the beginning of each month, mark in your organizer the most important upcoming activities such as tests, performances, and social engagements.  For each major activity, make a list of what additional time may be required for each.  For example:

Biology Test:Spend 3 hours in lab
Meet with tutor for 1 hour
Study at least 1 hour per night before test
    Ballet Performance:Weekend rehearsals
    Buy pointe shoes
    Sew costume
    Sell tickets
    Friend’s birthday party:Plan party
    Mail invitations
    Buy present

Once you have your list, you can start organizing your month by the week. Divide your time among the activities accordingly throughout the week.  Do not underestimate the time that may be needed.

  3. Make time for yourself.
It is important to schedule time in each day for yourself.  Whether it includes reading a book or spending time with friends, it is important to give yourself at least a half of an hour to relax.  Relaxation is the key to keeping yourself excited and motivated for dance.  Constantly pushing yourself will only create burn out.

It is definitely a challenge to juggle school activities, friendships, and dance.  But, with good planning, it can be done.
